Tech giant Apple dropped the biggest, most expensive and the smartest of the iPhones and the new Watch series this month. Apple has always worked their way around technologies – by eliminating the fingerprint scanner all together for Face ID – and have stuck by it since it is considered much more secure. With 2 billion units sold across the world, Apple hopes to further secure its grasp on the worldwide mobile, watch market. With that, let us dive deep in with the new devices:

Apple Watch Series 4:

Apple Watch Series 4 - 1

First up, the Apple Watch Series 4. With an edge to edge display, the Series 4 has gotten a sleek makeover. The curved corners and the bigger screen makes the display 30% larger than the previous models. It has a black ceramic and sapphire crystal back case which allows better cellular transmission. There will be two models – one with just the GPS and the other with GPS + cellular reception. The cellular model can communicate independently of a phone.

1) Bigger. Louder:

The Digital Crown now generates haptic feedback for more precise selections. The speaker is 50% louder, optimized for Siri and phone calls. The microphone has been moved to the opposite side of the phone to reduce echoes. The newest chipset powering the watch is said to be battery efficient and is twice as speedy.

2) ECG and Fall Detection:

It’s a first Apple’s Watch Series (or for that matter, any other watch device in the world!) with the in-built ECG. This new cool feature can detect heart issues such as irregular heartbeat. With the advanced accelerometer and gyroscope, the watch is now capable of detecting a fall. If it identifies a fall, it sends an alert to the user with the option to contact emergency services. If the user is immobile for one minute, the watch automatically calls 911 and notifies the user’s emergency contact. Absolutely game-changing technology, right?

3) Breathe:

The watchOS 5 is pretty customisable. It has tons of options which can be customised as per one’s preference. It also has a new user interface and has several new watch faces, including Breathe, which guides you to take a deep breath and to relax. The new fitness options include activity competitions in which users can challenge one another, automatic workout detection, and two new workout modules: Yoga and Hiking.

The new Apple Watch is set to hit the markets soon. It will be available in silver, gold, and space grey, the stainless models in polished, space black, and a new gold stainless. Watch bands from the older generation will fit the new watch.

The New iPhones – XS and the XS Max

The new iPhone duos – the XS and the XS Max – look similar to last year’s iPhone X, but it has better upgrades. Both phones differ in terms of screen size only. The XS has a 5.8-inch screen while the XS Max has a 6.5-inch screen. Both sport Super OLED displays and the screen-estate is spread from edge to edge. The new duo has Apple’s latest A12 Bionic chip – the first phones to have a 7-nanometer chipset. Apple claims this chipset is 50% faster and can perform 5 trillion operations per second. It can manage up to 512 GB of storage.

1) Better Cameras:

Yes. Cameras. Two of them on both the models have received some love. Both models sport a dual 12 MP camera setup with optical image stabilization on the rear and a 7 MP RGB camera on the front. The facial recognition engine has improved and is faster – thanks to the new image signal processor which connects with the neural engine for better optimisations. The Smart HDR feature shoots a 4 image buffer and combines them to create stunning photos. The advanced bokeh options can shoot images with bokeh which can be altered to a user’s preference.

2) Upgrades:

The iPhones finally have dual sim capabilities. One is a physical sim while the second one is an e-sim. The battery backup of both the phones has also gone up by a certain amount of time. The XS lasts half an hour longer than the previous generation X while the XS Max can go one and a half hour longer, thanks to its bigger battery capacity. iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will be available in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB capacity models in space grey, silver and a new gold finish.

The iPhone XR:

It wouldn’t be an Apple event without “One More Thing” in it. In this case, it was a new iPhone – the XR variant. This has a 6.1 inch LCD display and shares a lot of features of its more expensive siblings. The XR sports only a single camera on the back and the 3D touch feature is omitted here. And it is offered in a wide array of colours – black, white, red, yellow, coral, and blue. The XR will be cheaper amongst the new iPhones without compromising much in terms of hardware.

Apple has clearly created a ‘notch’ for itself in the market with these new devices. The competition is readying up for new iPhones, which only makes things a lot more exciting! The future definitely looks ‘smart’!
